Frequently Asked Questions

Photovoltaic (PV) cells in the solar panel convert the sun’s radiation into electricity. That electricity is stored in a cell for later use. Solar water heating uses the direct sunlight to heat your water.

how does solar energy work

Solar panels come in a wide variety of sizes, so how may you need comes down to a few different factors. How much space do you have? How many panels are needed to cover your usage? Solar panels are typically said to last 25 years, but 80% of panels in use beyond the 25 year mark still work. The panels will last a long time, but their rate of energy production might drop over time. As long as they stay within 80% of normal production numbers, you don’t need to replace them.

Solar panels are made of layers of silicone or some other semi-conductive material.

Solar panels produce the most energy when they face due south. Panels that face southeast or southwest produce solid energy output, but due south is the best.

Your solar panels should be set up away from debris and shade when they are installed, so you shouldn’t have to worry about cleaning your solar panels. At the very most, you should have your panels cleaned once a year by a professional.

The cells in solar panels store the sun’s radiation, so they work in cloudy weather. You can expect panels to operate at roughly 50% of their potential when it’s cloudy.
