Federal Solar Tax Credit

The solar tax credit went into effect federally on January 1st, 2008. This solar tax incentive lets builders like you deduct 30% of the solar panel system’s cost. You can deduct these costs from your federal taxes with no cap. On average, the federal tax incentive saves tax payers $5000 a year. That’s huge savings for a self-investment in solar. As long as you own the property and your solar panel or thermal water heating system is installed before December 21st, 2021, you can apply for this tax credit.

Solar-electric property

  • There is no maximum credit for systems placed in service after 2008.
  • Systems must be placed in service on or after January 1, 2006, and on or before December 31, 2021.
  • The home served by the system does not have to be the taxpayer’s principal residence.

Solar water-heating property

  • There is no maximum credit for systems placed in service after 2008.
  • Systems must be placed in service on or after January 1, 2006, and on or before December 31, 2021.

Florida Solar Tax Credit

State taxes can be affected by your solar panel system as well. In Florida, you can deduct up to 30% of the total cost of a solar panel system, just like your federal taxes. These incentives can takes an average of $5000 off the total cost of a solar energy system. Check with your state to see what incentives they have to switch to solar.
